Men's Swimming Edged By Undefeated Air Force
Nov. 9, 2002
FORT WORTH, Texas - For the second-straight meet, the TCU men's swimming put itself in position to knock off a talented opponent going into the last event. But, like last Saturday's setback to Cincinnati, the Horned Frogs fell just short versus undefeated Air Force in the last race of the meet and came out on the short end of a 124-119 decision. With the loss, TCU fell to 3-3 on the season while the Falcons raised their unblemished record to 4-0. TCU claimed victory in five of the meet's 13 events, including wins by seniors Aaron Ewert (Dallas, Texas/Garland) and Byron Coyle (Mooresville, N.C./S. Iredell/Indian River C.C.). Ewert, who missed last week's matchups with Louisville and Cincinnati due to sickness, opened his final season in style by notching the win in the 50-yard freestyle (:21.41). Coyle added a triumph in the 500 free, taking the race in 4:46.94. The Horned Frogs' divers also continued their early-season success by winning both diving competitions. Junior Stephen Gebren (Bedford, Texas/L.D. Bell/LSU) won the three-meter event with a score of 283.20, while freshman Kelly McCain (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll) took the one-meter with a 279.97 tally. Rounding out the Frogs' triumphs was freshman Allan McCallum (Bozeman, Mont./Bozeman), who knotted the meet heading into the last event with a win in the 200 breast (2:11.41). Also impressive for TCU was sophomore Craig Chapman (San Antonio, Texas/Robert E. Lee), who swam very well in placing second in the 200 back (1:50.46) and 200 free (1:43.69). "I am impressed with how well we swam today," TCU head coach Richard Sybesma said. "It was a heck of a meet against a very talented Air Force team. This type of hard-fought competition will pay off for us later in the season." TCU returns to action next Friday, Nov. 15, when it hosts perennial-power Notre Dame at 7 p.m. at Wilkerson Greines Pool. |
