TCU's Rubinson Claims All-America Classic Title
Nov. 26, 2002 EL PASO, Texas -- TCU senior Adam Rubinson held onto his lead by firing a 2-under-par round of 69 today at El Paso Country Club to claim the Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic title. He is the second Horned Frog ever to win the event. This year's tournament consisted of 24 collegiate golfers, all of whom have received All-America accolades during their careers. Only nine golfers finished within 10 strokes of Rubinson, who cruised to victory. "It was really a great time," Rubinson said. "Everyone out there was so supportive of the tournament and I felt like a lot of people were really pulling for me. It was a great one to win. For the most part I put the ball where I needed to off the tee, hit my irons well and made some short birdie putts. I just played really solid, smart golf." Rubinson shot a 71 and 68 on Monday, and he finished the tournament with a 54-hole total of 208. Brendon De Jonge (Virginia Tech) and Ryan Hybl (Georgia) finished tied for second place, five strokes behind Rubinson. The Fort Worth native was named an Honorable Mention All-American in 2002 after finishing as the runner up at the NCAA Championships. He is a two-time all-conference performer and is currently the nation's 19th-rated golfer according to the Golfweek ratings system. This summer he had a runner-up finish at the 2002 Western Amateur. Previously, former Frog Alberto Ochoa won the tournament in 1997 by virtue of a playoff. Rubinson is the fifth TCU golfer to compete in the event, joining Kevin Harrison (1979), Bjorn Svedin (1980), Chad Magee (1990) and Ochoa (1997). Past winners of the Western Refining Golf Classic include Jerry Pate (1974), Davis Love, III (1984), David Duval (1991), Notah Begay (1994) and Tiger Woods (1995).
