EL PASO, Texas - TCU golfer David Schultz claimed a share of third place among 26 All-Americans at the 29th Annual Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic at the El Paso Country Club in El Paso, Texas. An honorable mention All-American following the 2002-03 season, Schultz fired a 70 (-1) in the final round to finish the tournament with a seven-under 206.

"It's an honor just to be invited to play in the All-America Classic, let alone to finish where he did," TCU Head Coach Bill Montigel said. "Third place against that strong of a field is quite an accomplishment. I am proud of how David represented TCU and I am looking forward to him continuing that kind of play this spring."

In the 2002-03 season, Schultz burst onto the TCU scene by winning two collegiate tournament titles, the Ridges Intercollegiate and the ASU Thunderbird Invitational. In addition, the Fargo, N.D., native had two other finishes in the top 10. Schultz posted a 72.02 scoring average for the year and was a first-team All-Conference USA selection.

Schultz, a junior, was the sixth TCU golfer ever to play in the All-America Classic. Former Horned Frog standout Adam Rubinson won the 2002 tournament title.

Chris Nallen of Arizona tied the tournament scoring record with a three-round 196 (66-63-67). The final round saw 23 of the 26 players card par or better scores. For the tournament, the field posted a 69.92 stroke average, eclipsing the previous record set in 1992. This year also marked the first time that 20 players were under par for the 54-hole tournament.

Throughout the years, many Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic competitors have gone on to pursue successful careers in the Professional Golfers' Association of America and on the PGA Tour. Some of the past champions include: Ricky Barnes (2000), Notah Begay (1994), David Duval (1991), Davis Love III (1984), Jerry Pate (1974) and Tiger Woods (1995).

Each university is awarded a $1,000 scholarship if a golfer from that school competes in the tournament. The tournament, hosted by the Sun Bowl Association, is played at the par-71, 6,781-yard El Paso Country Club.
