FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU men's golf coach Bill Montigel today announced the signing of four high schoolers who will join the Horned Frog program for the 2005-06 season. All four of the golfers (Jon McLean, Tom Miles, Robby Ormand and Jesse Speirs) have reached the match play portion of the United States Golf Association's (USGA) Junior Amateur during their careers.

McLean (Weston, Fla.) was one of 10 players nationally to earn first-team Rolex Junior All-America honors from the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) this past year. This summer, he registered a pair of runner-up finishes at junior events, the AJGA Thunderbird and the AJGA FootJoy. For his play, he earned a spot on the AJGA Canon Cup team and helped the East claim victory at the annual event, which features the nation's top 20 junior boys and top 20 junior girls. McLean is currently rated 13th nationally according to the Golfweek/Sagarin Boys' Rankings. In 2003, McLean won three junior tournaments, the Texas-Oklahoma, the AJGA Hartford and the Golfweek/Precept. He is the son of Justine and Jim McLean. His father, Jim, is one of the premier golf instructors in the United States.

Miles, who is from Dublin, Ohio, has played in the stroke play portion of the 2003 and 2004 U.S. Amateurs. He is ranked 46th nationally by the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings. In 2003, he was named an AJGA Rolex Honorable Mention All-American as well as a FCWT Junior Golf Tour All-American. In addition, he is a previous champion at the AJGA Club Corp. In high school, Miles has been named first-team all-district three consecutive seasons, and this past year was named the Central Ohio Player of the Year. The second-team all-stater also helped direct his Columbus Bishop Watterson team to the Division I state title. He is the son of Barb and Nate Miles.

Ormand, who is currently rated 51st in the country by Junior Golf Scoreboard, hails from Austin, Texas. Ormand tied for 23rd during the stroke play portion of the 2004 U.S. Junior Amateur and went on to win a pair of matches before falling in the match play's round of 16. Ormand placed second at the Texas State Amateur over the past summer and also earned a top-20 finish at this year's Rolex Tournament of Champions. Last October, he won the Bluebonnet Cup, and in 2002, Ormand claimed victory at the Callaway Golf Jr. All-Star Classic at Colonial in Jackson, Miss. As a high schooler, Ormand won the District 25-5A title as a junior at Bowie High School. He is the son of Denise and Rob Ormand.

Speirs, a product of Bangor, Maine, reached the round of 16 at the 2003 U.S. Junior Championship. Speirs is ranked 64th nationally according to the Junior Golf Scoreboard. Over the summer, he finished tied for 25th at the 2004 Rolex Tournament of Champions. After his victory in 2004, he became the first player in 50 years to win the Maine Junior Championship three consecutive years. In 2002, Speirs took first place at the New England Junior Invitational and placed second at the Greater Bangor Open. In 2003, he tied for 22nd at the Rolex Tournament of Champions and tied for 15th at the Western Junior. He is the son of Deborah and Donald Speirs.

"I am really excited about this incoming group of freshmen," Montigel said. "We are losing some terrific players this spring and will need several players to step up next year. If these four guys continue to work hard, they could make considerable contributions during their college careers and continue the strong TCU golf tradition."

TCU, currently rated 10th nationally, has competed in the NCAA Championships 10 times in the past 14 years. In addition, the Horned Frogs have matched an all-sport school record by winning four consecutive conference championships.
