TCU Fires a Final-Round 299 to Grab Third Place at Inverness
TOLEDO, OHIO (September 19) - The TCU men's golf team
registered the second-lowest score of the final round (299) to take third
place in the first annual Inverness Intercollegiate Invitational in
Toledo, Ohio. TCU entered today's final 18 holes tied for fourth in the
13-team field, but battled hard at the Inverness Country Club, which is
one of the most legendary and lengthy courses in the nation.
Pacing the 13th-rated Horned Frogs was junior Andy Doeden, who tied for 10th individually with a 54-hole total of 223. In the second round, Doeden fired an even-par 71, one of just 11 par-or-better rounds turned in during the entire event. In addition to Doeden, senior Aaron Hickman (224-T13th) and sophomore Adam Rubinson (225-T19th) placed among the top 20 individuals. Senior Scott Volpitto (230-T37th) rebounded on Tuesday with the team's lowest score of the day, while junior Bret Guetz (232-T45th) continued his consistency with a final-round 78. "We got off to a slow start yesterday, but considering the difficulty of the golf course, I thought we played pretty well," coach Bill Montigel said. "Today we came out and did well on a day when the course was playing extremely tough. It was encouraging because we were ready to play and finished strong. This was a good tournament for us." South Carolina, who finished second to TCU at the season-opening "Bank of Tennessee/The Ridges" tournament, won the meet by 20 strokes, as the team carded a 24-over par 876. Oklahoma (896), TCU (898), Kansas (899) and UAB (900) round out the top five squads. Heading into today's play, the third through 11th positions remained wide open, as those nine teams were separated by just seven shots. TCU's next competition is "The NCAA Preview By Ping and Golfweek" men's collegiate golf tournament on September 25-26 in Durham, N.C. The field includes all top 10 teams ranked in the preseason Mastercard Collegiate Golf Rankings and 14 of the top 20 in the poll. The two-day, 54-hole event will take place at the 7,054-yard, par-72 Duke University Golf Club, which also will host the NCAA Men's Golf Championship in the spring of 2001.
