TCU Holds Down Share of Eighth Through Two Rounds of NCAAs
June 2, 2004 HOT SPRINGS, Va. - In the second round of the NCAA Championship, No. 10 TCU's 12-over-par 292 at the Homestead's Cascades Course (6,679 yards, par 70) gave the team a two-round total of 573 (+13), good for a share of eighth place after 36 holes. The 107th edition of the tournament is being hotly contested, as 13 teams are within seven strokes of the lead and 21 schools are 14 strokes or less off the top spot. TCU has used a balanced attack through two days, as each of the five Horned Frogs rank between 20th and 75th place among the 156 participants. At eight-over, California (568) leads the 30-team field, followed by Kentucky (569) and BYU (570).
Junior David Schultz led the way for TCU in round two with a one-over 71. He made a tap-in birdie on No. 14 after knocking his approach from the left rough on the par-4 hole within three feet of the pin. Only a three-putt on No. 18 pushed Schultz above par for the round. After an opening score of 74, Schultz is five-over-par for the tournament (145) and now is in a tie for 50th place.
Fellow junior J.J. Killeen bounced back from his first-round 75 to score a two-over 72. After taking a bogey on No. 1, he saved par with a 12-foot putt on No. 2 to get him on track. Killeen stayed between even-par and two-over for the entire 18 holes. He has a two-day score of 147, which has the second-team all-conference performer in a share of the 75th position. Sophomore Colby Beckstrom finished with a flurry to post a three-over 73. Beckstrom was six-over with four holes to play before stringing together three straight birdies. He got his roll started after his tee shot on the par-3 15th stuck within three feet. He then grabbed birdies on the back-to-back par-5s (Nos. 16 and 17), and got up-and-down for a par on the last hole. He joins Schultz with a five-over 145 (T-50th) through 36 holes. Adam Meyer, who netted a stout four-under 66 on Tuesday, squeezed out a 76 in round two. Meyer had a pair of double-bogeys in the round, including one on the 18th after his tee shot on the par-3 finishing hole landed in the water. The senior from China Spring, Texas, still owns a team-best two-day sum of 142 and holds down 23rd place at the event. Senior Stephen Polanski had a 78 (+8) on Tuesday morning after a 69 yesterday afternoon. Polanski continued his solid play until a triple-bogey on the 12th moved him from plus-three to plus-six. For the tournament, Polanski is tied for 75th at 147 (+7). The 72-hole event will continue on Thursday with the all-important third round. The field will be cut to the top 15 teams and lowest six individuals following 54 holes. TCU, paired with No. 5 UCLA and No. 8 Arizona, will tee off beginning at 7:45 a.m. (ET)/6:45 a.m. (CT).
