Two Horned Frog Golfers Honored as All-Americans
June 2, 2003 FORT WORTH, Texas - The Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) has officially announced the PING Men's Golf Division I All-America teams, and for the second straight year, the list contains a pair of TCU golfers. Senior Adam Rubinson claimed third-team accolades, while sophomore David Schultz earned honorable mention status. Including last season, when Rubinson and former Frog Bret Guetz were recognized, 2003 marks the sixth time in school history that TCU teammates have been All-Americans in the same season. TCU now has had 12 different golfers earn a total of 17 All-American awards. "Both of these guys had great seasons," head coach Bill Montigel said. "It's just tremendous to see that their hard work has been recognized on the national level. It really has been another special year for the TCU golf program and we're looking forward to continuing the tradition next fall." Rubinson, who was an honorable mention choice in 2002, became just the fourth TCU golfer, joining Chad Magee (1990, 1991), Alberto Ochoa (1997, 1998) and J.J. Henry (1996, 1997, 1998), to become an All-American multiple times. Rubinson owned a team-best and career-best scoring average of 71.34 during the past season and was named Conference USA Player of the Year and first-team all-league. He also was selected as TCU's Male Co-Athlete of the Year in 2002-03. In November, the Fort Worth native recorded his first collegiate victory when he won the Western Refining All-America Classic by finishing first in a field of 24 All-Americans from the 2001-02 season. Additionally, he had three runner-up placements on the year. For his career, Rubinson played in 51 tournaments, carrying a 72.93 scoring average over 147 rounds. He owned 16 top-10 and 10 top-20 finishes in his four seasons with the Horned Frogs and was a three-time all-conference player. Schultz, who transferred to TCU prior to the season, burst onto the scene by taking medalist honors in his first TCU tournament, The Ridges Intercollegiate. He also claimed an individual victory with a near record-setting performance at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational that earned him Golf Digest National Golfer of the Week accolades in mid-April. For the year, he carried a 72.03 stroke average and was a first-team All-Conference USA performer. Schultz, who hails from Fargo, N.D., also recorded a pair of top-20 finishes and two top-10 finishes in his first season with the Frogs. He became just the third TCU sophomore, joining Henry and Ochoa, to receive All-America recognition.
