HOT SPRINGS, Va. - The 10th-ranked TCU Horned Frogs opened the 107th NCAA Championships in impressive fashion, posting a one-over-par team score of 281 to sit in third place among 30 teams after the first of the tournament's four rounds. TCU's senior tandem led the way, as Adam Meyer recorded a four-under 66, while Stephen Polanski carded a 69 (-1).

The Homestead's Cascades Course (6,679 yards, par 70) saw just one team break par on Tuesday, as California holds the first-round lead at 279 (-1). TCU is just one stroke out of the second spot, which is currently occupied by BYU (280), who was paired with TCU in the afternoon.

"That was a tremendous way to start the tournament," TCU Head Coach Bill Montigel said. "Our whole team played really well today, but I can't say enough about Adam and Stephen. It's great to see seniors step up at a time like this."

Meyer, who is tied for second place individually, was stellar throughout the entire round. He had five birdies and just one bogey in tough conditions, which included howling winds in the early afternoon. The native of China Spring, Texas, birdied two of the final four holes and also lipped out a birdie try on the last green to close the day. Meyer's final tap-in came less than one minute before a storm unleashed damaging winds and torrential rain on the course.

Polanski (T-9th) was also impressive on Tuesday, as he matched his second lowest round of the season (69). The Livonia, Mich., player finished his round in style, scoring birdies on Nos. 6 and 8 (which were 15 and 17 for TCU), then pulling off an impressive up-and-down par on the final hole. After a tee shot left him under an evergreen tree, Polanski punched the ball back into the fairway and then nearly holed out his chip shot from 40 yards away.

Sophomore Colby Beckstrom finished at two-over (72) despite playing much of the day under par. Beckstrom had his short irons and putter working throughout the day. He is currently tied for 51st place among the 156 participants.

Meanwhile, David Schultz (T-87th) notched a four-over 74 on the first day. The junior from Fargo, N.D., made his lone birdie of the day on the next-to-last hole, draining a medium-range putt on the final par-3.

Junior J.J. Killeen, who paced the Horned Frogs in the Central Regional, owned a round of 75. He played even-par golf (35) on the second nine holes after going out with a five-over 40. He has a share of 108th place through 18 holes.

The 72-hole event will continue on Wednesday with the second round. TCU, again paired with Florida and BYU, is scheduled to tee off beginning at 8:30 a.m. off No. 1. Live hole-by-hole scoring of the tournament will be available throughout the tournament on www.golfstat.com. The field will be cut to the top 15 teams and lowest six individuals following 54 holes.
