TUCSON, Ariz. - The TCU Horned Frogs posted a 1-over 285, the best score on day two, to scoot into third place at the Mountain West Conference Men's Golf Championships, just one stroke shy of second place and only nine out of the top spot. Sophomore Robby Ormand is in a three-way tie for the individual lead, while classmate Jesse Speirs is tied for fifth.

With an 8-under 560, BYU, rated 17th nationally according to Golfstat, leads the tournament. No. 6 UNLV (568), 28th-ranked TCU (569) and 49th-rated San Diego State (571), are all in contention.

Ormand posted his second straight 3-under 68 to erase a three-stroke deficit in the individual race. At the Omni Tucson National Golf Resort's Catalina Course (par 71, 7,136 yards) earlier this month, he recorded a career-best 16th-place finish. Of the six rounds that Ormand has played at the course this year, he has broken 70 four times.

Another Frog with a chance at the individual crown is Speirs, who is a mere three strokes out of the lead after posting a 4-under 67 on Friday. His day two score, achieved courtesy of seven birdies, was the best by any of the 45 participants.

In the past 20 years, TCU has had five players win conference medalist honors. Current PGA Tour star J.J. Henry (1998 WAC), along with Bret Guetz (2002 C-USA) and Adam Meyer (2004 C-USA) won outright crowns, while Frogs Colby Beckstrom and Drew Stoltz shared the distinction (2005 C-USA).

Meanwhile, freshman Travis Woolf fell into a share of 17th place after a 5-over 76. He has a two-round score of 146 (+4). Senior Drew Stoltz (T-30th) has a 36-hole 149, while sophomore Jon McLean (34th) is at 151 (+9).

TCU, paired with BYU and UNLV, will tee off Saturday's final round beginning at 12:10 p.m. (CT). Live scoring of the event will be available on www.Golfstat.com.
