TCU Men Tied for First Following C-USA's Opening Round
April 22, 2002 NAVARRE, Fla. - The Horned Frog men's golf team is tied with Southern Miss atop the leaderboard after day one of the Conference USA Championships at The Club at Hidden Creek. The Frogs are led by senior Bret Guetz, who is the tournament leader through 18 holes. As a team, TCU shot a three-over par score of 291 in the first round to keep pace with the Golden Eagles. Much of the field of 14 remains in striking distance, however, as just four strokes separate the top seven teams. Guetz, who was the medalist at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational just one week ago, fired an opening-round six-under par 66 to pace the field. Guetz shot 33s on both the front and back sides of the course, and now has registered four consecutive sub-70 rounds. Since 1983, just two TCU players (Jim Sorenson and J.J. Henry) have won at least two individual titles in a single season. Adam Rubinson is also among the tournament's top 20, as his one-over score of 73 has him in a tie for 18th place. He was three-over on the front nine, but shot a two-under 34 on the back to move up the charts. Rubinson is searching for his sixth top-20 finish of the year. With a two-over par 74, Andy Doeden ranks just behind Rubinson with a share of 21st place, while Steve Shuert (T-52nd, 78) and J.J. Killeen (T-59th, 80) round out TCU's scorers. This is the seventh-rated Horned Frogs' first-ever appearance in the Conference USA Championships. Last year's squad won the Western Athletic Conference title by one stroke.
