TUCSON, Ariz. -- The TCU Horned Frogs, currently rated seventh in the Precept Coaches Poll, sit in a share of third place following the first round of the National Invitational Tournament after posting a six-over-par 294. Among a tough field, the Frogs trail only No. 4 Texas (289) and No. 19 Arizona State (293) and are tied with No. 5 Arizona (294).

Sophomore David Schultz led TCU on day one, registering a two-under score of 70 that has him tied for third place individually. Schultz, who is one of four TCU golfers rated among the nation's top 100, is looking for his best finish since he tied for sixth at the Prestige in early November. Schultz was bogey-free and was four-under through 15 holes, but suffered bogeys on No. 16 and No. 18 to close his round.

Freshman Colby Beckstrom carded an even-par 72, and shares seventh place after day one. Junior Adam Meyer and senior Adam Rubinson each scored rounds of 76 (+4) to tie for 34th, while sophomore J.J. Killeen resides in 46th place after shooting a five-over 77.

The 54-hole tournament will continue with 18 holes on Monday, March 31, and will finish up with a final round on Tuesday, April 1. The tournament is being played at the Tucson National Golf Course on the Orange and Gold nines, a par-72, 7,138-yard layout. It is the same setup that the course uses for its PGA Tour stop, the Chrysler Classic of Tucson.

The elite 15-team field consists of 10 teams nationally-ranked in the current Precept top 25. The schools include: Alabama, No. 5 Arizona, No. 19 Arizona State, Houston, Kent State, No. 13 Minnesota, No. 18 New Mexico, No. 20 Northwestern, No. 23 Pepperdine, No. 7 TCU, No. 4 Texas, Tulsa, No. 8 UNLV, Southern California and No. 24 Washington. From the participating teams, seven players recently named to the Ben Hogan Award Watch List, which is given to the outstanding male college golfer, are competing.
