Guetz Paces Squad with Fifth Place Showing

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, CALIF. (March 7, 2001) -- The ninth-ranked TCU Horned Frogs men’s golf team had another strong showing this spring with a second-place finish at the 24th annual Cleveland Golf Classic, held at North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif. March 5-6.

The Frogs shot a two-round total of 587, six strokes off the pace of Arizona State. The 18th-ranked Sun Devils placed three of its golfers in the top 10 on its way to winning the team title for the second straight year.

Oregon State was third (592), followed by Washington (598) and three teams tied for fifth with a score of 600: tourney host #8 USC, #11 Minnesota and Fresno State.

David Yarnes of Oregon State, who shot the day’s lowest score on Monday (70), finished with a solid 72 on Tuesday to win individual medalist honors by one stroke over runners up Matt Jones and Jim Park of Arizona State and Steve Conway of UCLA. Bret Guetz of TCU was fifth with a two-day total of 145.

The Horned Frog duo of Scott Volpitto and Steve Shuert each shot a two-day total of 147, tying for ninth. Jamie Kellam was one stroke back with a 148, while Adam Rubinson finished in a tie for 24th with a seven-over par 149.

Weather was the determining factor in the tournament. Rain and wind allowed for only one difficult round on Monday, as just three teams shot under 300 and only three golfers shot par or lower. Tuesday’s round featured sunnier skies, no rain and yielded generally lower scores, with nine teams shooting under 300 and 10 golfers at par or better.

The Frogs are in action again this weekend when they take part in the UNLV Intercollegiate meet in Las Vegas, March 9-11.
