TCU Men's Golf Team Prepares For Spring Slate
Feb. 7, 2002 FORT WORTH, Texas -- Head coach Bill Montigel announced today that his roster for the Frogs' upcoming golf tournament, the Waikoloa Intercollegiate, has been finalized. The TCU men's golf team enters the spring rated eighth in the nation according to the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings system. The five players, in the order in which they qualified, are: senior Andy Doeden, senior Bret Guetz, senior Steve Shuert, freshman J.J. Killeen and junior Adam Rubinson. The same TCU lineup won two events during the fall season, The Ridges Intercollegiate and the 49er Collegiate Classic. Selected 29th in Golfweek's preseason poll, the Frogs propelled themselves into the top 10 with four top-3 finishes in five events. TCU had a 27-7-1 record against teams in the top 50 and went 65-7-1 overall. Golfweek senior writer Ron Balicki recently gave the Frogs an A+ grade, one of just two he awarded, for the Frogs' impressive fall season. "All five players are playing really well," Montigel said. "We're looking forward to the spring season and ultimately the NCAA Championships." The Waikoloa Intercollegiate takes place Feb. 13-15 in Waikoloa, Hawaii. In other scheduling news, TCU is looking for a replacement tournament for the U.S. Collegiate Championship, which was scheduled for Apr. 5-7 in Puerto Vallarta. It became the second top-flight college golf tournament this year that has been cancelled due to the struggling U.S. economy. |
