Four freshmen, one junior to tee off for Horned Frogs
Feb. 4, 2006 FORT WORTH, Texas -- The TCU men's golf roster for its spring-opening tournament has been determined, head coach Bill Montigel has announced, and for the first time in school history, the Horned Frogs will feature four freshmen among the group of five players. The four true freshmen -- Jon McLean, Tom Miles, Jesse Speirs and Robby Ormand -- placed first through fourth at the team's 72-hole intrasquad qualifier to join Drew Stoltz on the travel roster to Hawaii. The 54-hole Taylor Made/Waikoloa Intercollegiate will be played Wednesday through Friday at the Waikoloa Village Course. "We're really excited to get the spring season underway," Montigel said. "This is the youngest team we've ever fielded, and it will be a great chance for our freshmen to see how they stack up against some of the best players in the country." TCU, rated 44th entering the spring season according to the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings system, will compete against 20 teams, including five top-25 squads. Three top-10 schools--No. 2 Oklahoma State, No. 3 Georgia Tech and No. 7 Arizona State--headline the field. Twenty-first-ranked Washington, No. 22 Pepperdine, No. 27 Texas, No. 41 Colorado, No. 43 Southern California and No. 45 Augusta State are also among the nation's top 50. Arkansas, Fresno State, Hawaii-Hilo, Hawaii-Manoa, Kansas, Oklahoma, Oregon, Oregon State, Rhode Island, Stanford and UC Davis round out the competing schools. --www.gofrogs.com--
