TCU golfers take seventh at U.S. Collegiate
April 11, 2006
ALPHARETTA, Ga. - The TCU men's golf team (297-299-294-890, +26) concluded its final tune-up prior to the Mountain West Conference Championships by taking seventh place among 13 teams at the first-ever U.S. Collegiate Championship. The Horned Frogs moved up two places on the final day after shooting a 6-over-par 294, the team's best effort in the 54-hole event. Fifteenth-ranked Clemson won the tournament with an even-par total of 864. Three of the top four schools and 10 of nation's top-25 squads in the GCAA/Bridgestone Coaches' Poll competed at the 13-team invitational. TCU defeated four nationally ranked clubs - No. 7 BYU, 10th-ranked East Tennessee State, No. 14 Tennessee and 24th-rated Alabama. The Frogs dominated their playing partners on Tuesday, playing 10 shots better than Alabama and 14 strokes better than Texas, to pass both schools in the final standings. Jon McLean matched the team high with his third top-20 finish of the campaign. The true freshman registered his second consecutive 71 (-1) to finish in a tie for 14th place at 219 (+3). He was the lone Horned Frog to break par on the course and was one of just eight golfers to post a red number in the final round. Senior Drew Laning and sophomore Franklin Corpening narrowly missed their fourth top-20 landings of the season, as they shared 21st position. After two straight even-par rounds, Laning shot a 6-over 78 in the final round to finish with a 222. Corpening countered with his best effort of the week, a 1-over 73. Both players carded eagles on the par-5 18th, the team's ninth hole of the day. Tom Miles (T-52nd, 232) and Drew Stoltz (T-57th, 233) rounded out the TCU contingent. Both players battled back from tough Monday afternoon rounds to post solid numbers on the final 18. With a 76, Miles was six shots better than his previous score, while Stoltz rebounded from an 83 to record a 2-over 74 on Tuesday.
TCU is next in action April 27-29 in Sunriver, Ore., at the team's first MWC Championships. Four of the league's nine schools are ranked among the nation's top 40, including No. 6 UNLV, No. 7 BYU, No. 32 New Mexico and No. 39 TCU. The Horned Frogs have won a school all-sport record five consecutive league championships, with four coming in Conference USA and one in the Western Athletic Conference. -www.gofrogs.com- Team Scores TCU Individual Scores |
