MIAMI (Dec. 6) -- TCU's LaDainian Tomlinson, the nation's leading rusher, and University of Miami defensive linebacker Dan Morgan have been named the Football News 2000 Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, respectively.

Tomlinson, who rushed for 2,158 yards and 22 touchdowns this season, beat out an all-star cast of finalists that included quarterbacks Drew Brees of Purdue, Josh Heupel of Oklahoma and Chris Weinke of Florida State, as well as Northwestern running back Damien Anderson.

Morgan, who led the Big East with 138 tackles, earned the nod over defensive back Fred Smoot of Mississippi State and J.T. Thatcher of Oklahoma, linebacker Keith Adams of Clemson, and Florida State defensive end Jamal Reynolds.

This year's Football News award recipients will be honored on Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at the National Athletic Awards ceremony at the magnificent Fox Theatre in Detroit.The awards ceremony, which will be televised nationally by Fox Sports Net, will be sponsored by the Dodge Division of DaimlerChrysler.

Last year's Football News Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year award winners were Wisconsin running back Ron Dayne and Virginia Tech defensive end Corey Moore, respectively.
