Patterson Completes Coaching Staff
Feb. 25, 2002 Kirk Doll has joined the TCU football staff as the linebackers coach, head coach Gary Patterson announced today. Patterson also named David Bailiff as the defensive coordinator and promoted offensive line coach Eddie Williamson to assistant head coach. "Kirk is well thought of by the high school coaches in the state of Texas," said Patterson. "He's a former Texas high school coach who spent several years at A&M, and has recruited this state on a high level every place he's been. He brings a great deal of experience and has worked with some outstanding coaches like R.C. Slocum, Lou Holtz and John Cooper." Doll comes to TCU after spending the last eight years on the staff at Notre Dame. For the past two seasons he worked with the entire Irish linebacking corps and with the kickers and punters. In 1998 and '99, Doll worked exclusively with the inside linebackers and in his first four seasons at Notre Dame, he worked with the outside linebackers. He coached the Notre Dame special teams from 1994 through 1997. In 1997, Doll added the title of assistant head coach and, in that role, handled a variety of administrative duties. He was a nominee for the 2001 Frank M. Broyles Award given to the nation's outstanding assistant coach. "I'm excited about joining the staff and the university," said Doll. "I'm glad to be back in the state of Texas and working with one of the top young coaches in the game in Gary Patterson." Before going to Notre Dame, Doll served as the outside linebacker coach for five seasons at Texas A&M. The Wichita, Kan., native spent six years overall on the Aggie staff, working with the inside linebackers in 1988 before switching to the outside linebacker assignment a year later. Doll helped A&M lead the nation in total defense in 1991 (222.4 yards per game), rank third in '93 (247.6), lead the nation in pass efficiency defense in '93 (75.0 rating points) and stand third in scoring defense (10.8 points per game). Prior to his arrival in College Station, Doll served as an assistant at Arizona State for three years (1985-1987), working with the outside linebackers under head coach John Cooper. He coached the offensive line at Tulsa for five seasons (1980-84) and handled the tight ends for a year at Iowa State (1979). Doll began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Wichita State, then served as an assistant at Texas City High School in Texas City, Texas for two years (1977-78). His coaching career has featured experience in 13 bowl games, including the Rose, Fiesta, Orange, Cotton, Independence and Gator Bowls. Born September 24, 1951, he earned undergraduate degrees from both East Carolina (1974) and Wichita State (1976). He played as both a defensive end and tackle at East Carolina. Married to the former Kathy Reding, they are parents of three children, Kate, Kelsey and Kyle. Bailiff is beginning his second season at TCU. A former standout tight end at Southwest Texas, Bailiff joined the Horned Frogs in 2001 after most recently serving as the assistant head coach/defensive coordinator at his alma mater. In addition, he coached the defensive line at Southwest Texas. In 1999, he was selected by the AFCA as the NCAA I-AA Assistant Coach of the Year.
Williamson is also in his second season at TCU, working as the offensive line coach. He came to Fort Worth from Wake Forest University, where he served as the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. Williamson joined the WFU staff in January of 2000, after previously serving as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Texas Southern. Prior to his tenure at Texas Southern, Williamson served as an assistant coach at several universities, including Baylor, North Carolina, Wake Forest, South Carolina, Georgia, Duke and Furman. Williamson also has experience as a head coach on the collegiate level, serving as the head coach at VMI from 1985-88.
