Sept. 20, 2003

College Station, Texas - The TCU women's cross country team, led by a first place finish from Mary Kinyanjui, placed second at the Texas A&M Invitational, held here today. The TCU men's squad finished seventh among a 16-team field.

Kinyanjui, a junior from Kiambu, Kenya, covered the 6K course in a winning time of 21:34, 10 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor, Kate Gorry of Rice. Katrina Zielinski placed seventh overall with a time of 22:05. Other TCU finishers included Heather Isbell (19th-22:47), Calandra Stewart (21st-22:50), McKale Davis (23rd-22:54), Pattie Parker (78th-24:19) and Katie Cosgrove (111th-25:19).

"Much better performance than last week," said TCU coach Derek Koonts. "Mary looked extremely focused and ran exceptionally well. Katrina Zielinski also ran a very good race. The entire team seemed much better prepared for the competition this week than they did at the season opener a week ago. I think they have adjusted to the training program we've put them through and knew a little more of what to expect. We still have some work to do, but this was certainly a step in the right direction."

On the men's side, TCU was led by Johnathan Bundren, who completed the 8K course in 26:28. Freshman Alex Morris was TCU's second finisher with a time of 26:44, good for 52nd place overall.

"The men showed some signs of improvement," said Koonts. "It will help tremendously when we get (second team all-Conference USA performer) Jackson Langat back for the Jamboree in two weeks."

The Frogs will take next weekend off before resuming action in Stillwater on October 4 when they take part in the Cowboy Jamboree.
