WACO, Texas - The TCU cross country team opened the 2006 with a strong showing at the Bear Relays on Friday at the Baylor Intramural Fields.

The Bear Relays was not a traditional cross country meet, as each competing school divided into teams of two individuals. Similar to a relay race, the first runner ran a leg of the race before passing the baton to his or her teammate for the final leg.

Competing in 8,000-meter women's race, TCU's duo of Calandra Stewart and Danielle Selner finished third in a time of 28.27.09. Stewart and Selner had the highest finish among any duo not from Baylor - men or women.

"Calandra Stewart and Danielle Selner had a chance to win the whole meet," Heins said. "I thought that their finish showed where there competitive level was at and that they are close to where they need to be."

Winning the women's race was Baylor's duo of Renae Van Wye and Nicole Jones in a time of 28.20.90. Placing just ahead of Stewart and Selner was Baylor's team of Lyndsy Bedell and Lauren Hagans, who ran a 28.25.47.

Carlene Mayfield and Cassie Hostick finished seventh for the Horned Frogs in a time of 29.12.97. Placing ninth was Halie Bullin and McKale Davis, who posted a time of 29.42.36. TCU's final team of Amanda Foust and Shannon Andrews finished 22nd in a time of 33.51.02.

On the men's side, TCU's duo of Festus Kigen and Alex Morris placed fourth in the men's 12,000-meter race with a time of 38.35.94.

Winning the men's race was Baylor's team of Mitch Sanders and Bo Price, who posted a time of 37.01.46.

TCU's duo of J.T. Reinert and Matt Manly placed sixth with a time of 39.20.02. Houston Bolin and Cody Cook placed 12th with a time of 40.19.80.

"The men got spread out really quickly," head coach Eric Heins said. "We competed very well and were able to make up a lot of ground. It was a hard race to judge where we are at.

"Overall, I was very proud of the way we competed as a whole."

TCU returns to action on Sept. 9 at the North Texas Invitational in Denton, Texas.
