TCU women fifth, men sixth at MWC Swimming Championships
Feb. 23, 2006 OKLAHOMA CITY - The TCU women's and men's swimming and diving teams reside in fifth and sixth place, respectively, halfway through the 2006 Mountain West Conference Championships. Following eight men's and seven women's events at the Oklahoma City Community College Aquatic Center, the women have collected 140 points, while the men sport 184. Utah continues to lead the women's competition with 258 points. The Utes are followed by BYU (211), UNLV (202), Wyoming (143), TCU (140), Colorado State (140), New Mexico (128), San Diego State (77) and Air Force (65). Utah (263) is also on top in the men's competition. UNLV (252), BYU (222), Air Force (212), Wyoming (212) and TCU (184) round out the group. On the women's side, Erica Tate took fourth in the 50-yard freestyle with an NCAA "B" cut qualifying time of 23.39, her best mark of the year. Keleigh Wentworth went 2:06.57 in the 200-yard individual medley to place ninth. Other top individual finishes for the TCU women included: Keilah Walker in the 500-yard freestyle (13th, 5:03.46) and Leann Cathcart, who had a season-best effort in the 50 free (14th, 23.95). Cathcart, Emily Duerringer, Karen Sandifer and Tate combined to take third place in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The quartet posted a season-best time of 1:34.25. For the second straight day, Kelly McCain earned runner-up honors in a men's diving event, this time on the 3-meter springboard (330.70). Teammate R.J. Hesselberg placed seventh with a sum of 271.90. TCU's best performance in the lanes came from Scott McCracken, who finished sixth in the 50-yard freestyle with a 20.65 in the finals. Fellow Frog Jonathon Berrettini also snagged a top-10 finish in the event, placing 10th at 20.82. Alejandro Gomez netted the seventh position in the 500-yard freestyle with a finals time of 4:29.05. Guillermo Ramirez in the 50 free (14th, 21.07) and Teylor Arboleda in the 200 IM (16th, 1:55.11) also performed well. The Horned Frogs' 200 free relay team took third in 1:21.50. McCracken, Ramirez, Brent Norcoss and Berrettini teamed up for the bronze medal finish.
