H2O Frogs Head To Houston For C-USA Championships/Invitational
Feb. 22, 2005 HEADING TO HOUSTON -- The TCU swimming and diving team returns to the pool, Wednesday through Saturday, in Houston at the C-USA Championships. The event will be held at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Pool on the University of Houston's campus all week. LOOKING FOR THE CONFERENCE REPEAT -- The Frogs will look to win their second straight C-USA Championship/Invitational titles this weekend in Houston. The men's team will be going for an unprecedented fourth straight title, while the women's squad will be looking to earn back-to-back championships. No women's team in Conference USA history has won two straight titles. FROGS IN THE POWER RANKINGS -- Both the men and women's swimming and diving teams are ranked in the top-10 in the Mid-Major Power Polls. The women's squad is the third rated team in the poll, while the men are seventh. The mid-major poll is comprised of the conferences that do not benefit from the large television contracts or revenue from football or basketball. They are all the schools in the non-BCS leagues. REIGNING HONOREES - Senior Craig Chapman and Head Coach Richard Sybesma are two of the reigning honorees in Conference USA. Chapman was named the Swimmer of the Meet after he earned all-conference honors in six events at the 2004 C-USA Invitational. The Tomball, Texas, native swept the 100 and 200-backstroke and won the 500-freestyle, individually. In the relays, he was a member of the winning 800 free and the 400-medley. The medley set a C-USA record en route to their victory. Sybesma was honored as the C-USA Coach of the Year after he led the H2O Frogs to the conference sweep. It was the first time that the same school had accomplished the feat. The honor was the fifth time that Sybesma has been honored as the Coach of the Year in his career. FROGS IN THE WEEKLY HONORS -- Three members of the women's team were honored in 2004-05 as the C-USA Swimmer and Diver of the Week. Erica Tate and Kelly Seely swept the honors on Nov. 16. On Jan. 25, the Frogs again swept the honors as senior Aimee Moreau was the Swimmer of the Week, while Seely was again the Diver of the Week. YET ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL DUAL SEASON -- The Frogs combined to finish with a 18-5 dual record this season. The highlight of the season was on Jan. 21 when the Horned Frogs defeated LSU at the University Recreation Center. TCU headed into the final event, the 200-freestyle relay, needing to win to beat the SEC-foe, and they did just that. The women's squad reached 10 wins for the fourth straight year as they finished with a 11-2 record, while the men's team ended with a 7-3 mark. THE SYBESMA FILE -- In 26 years as the head coach of the TCU swimming and diving program, Richard Sybesma has won more than 300 duals. With the 18 wins this season, Sybesma now has a 318-229-3 (.581) record with the H2O Frogs. ETCHING THEIR NAMES IN THE RECORD BOOKS -- Junior Kelly McCain and sophomore Erica Tate both broke school records this season for the Frogs. McCain has topped his school record in the 1-meter diving (6 dives) twice this season. Heading into this season, the junior had 327.75 points in the event. This season, he has improved on his score by nearly 10 points with a mark of 336.60. Meanwhile, Tate broke a 14-year old school record in December at the UT Invite. The sophomore finished the 100-butterfly with a time of 55.41 seconds to top Katie Tredennick's previous best of 56.19. FROGS PROJECTED TO WIN 13 EVENTS -- Based on times leading up the the C-USA Championships, the Frogs are projected to win 13 events this week in Houston. Women's Events (Name of ind. in parenthesis): Individually, the Frogs are projected to have all-conference performers (top-3) in 14 events.
