Horned Frog swimmers pick up impressive wins over Missouri State
Jan. 28, 2006 FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU men's and women's swimming and diving teams swam their fastest dual meets of the season Saturday to earn impressive victories over Missouri State at the University Recreation Center. It was the final dual meet of the year for the TCU men, who improved to 6-4 with a 73-39 win. The women pushed their season mark to 12-2 with a 77-36 triumph. TCU won 20 of 26 events at the meet, with the men and women each notching 10 victories. Both Horned Frog teams led throughout the entire afternoon to avenge last season's defeats to the Bears. The Horned Frog women started off with a victory in the 400-yard medley relay, thanks to the team of Keleigh Wentworth, Maribeth Pottenger, Erica Tate and Karen Sandifer (3:55.00). Wentworth's leadoff leg time of 59.53 was a personal best in the 100-yard backstroke. Wentworth continued her impressive Saturday with a win in the 200-yard individual medley (2:08.33). The TCU women swept the medal positions in two events, the 50-yard freestyle and the 200-yard breaststroke. Tate (23.68), Leann Cathcart (24.06) and Page Clark (24.77) went 1-2-3 in the 50, while Pottenger (2:22.76), Katie Rosen (2:24.75) and Christi Cannon (2:26.34) nailed down the top three spots in the 200 breast. In the 200 free, Sandifer placed first in a time of 1:54.27, while teammate Emily Duerringer took second (1:55.10). Tate secured top honors in the 100 free with a 52.06. In addition, Jennifer Antisdale won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:05.11.
The Frogs capped off the day with a victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Rikki Covey, Tara Sullivan, Cathcart and Duerringer teamed up to win that event in 3:35.12. Kelly Seely won both the 1-meter (292.93) and 3-meter diving events. Her score of 360.15 in the 3-meter event obliterated her previous school record (322.28) achieved earlier this season. The men's team also jumped out to a quick 7-0 start with a photo finish in the 400 medley relay. Guillermo Ramirez, Aran Bean, Teylor Arboleda and Jonathon Berrettini edged the top Missouri State squad by .1 in the event with a time of 3:23.73. In the 200-yard backstroke, Ramirez, ranked 23rd in the nation in the event, placed first with a time of 1:49.40. He also claimed the 50-yard freestyle in 21.37. Meanwhile, Arboleda was victorious in the 200-yard individual medley (1:55.88). Yousif Del Valle touched first in both the 100 free (46.60) and the 200 free (1:39.82) to give the Horned Frogs 10 team points. He also led off the winning 400 free relay team (3:07.93), with teammates Scott McCracken, Brent Norcross and Zane Palmer sealing the victory. Kelly McCain and R.J. Hesselberg went 1-2 for the Frogs in both diving competitions. On the 1-meter board, McCain posted a 313.50, while Hesselberg had a 6-dive mark of 271.50. On the 3-meter, McCain's score of 355.28, which was just .07 off his school record, took top honors ahead of Hesselberg's 321.08. TCU's other win came in the 1000-yard freestyle, as Alejandro Gomez posted a 9:41.87. Prior to the meet, the Horned Frogs' 10 seniors, five women and five men, were honored. The TCU women round out the home season Wednesday night against North Texas and Incarnate Word. The meet is slated to start at 6 p.m. at the University Recreation Center. --www.gofrogs.com-- |
