SAN DIEGO - The TCU women's swimming and diving team fell to San Diego State on Friday by a score of 169-129 at the Aztec Aquaplex. The loss dropped the Horned Frogs to 4-5 overall and 1-4 in the Mountain West Conference.

Junior swimmer Cheryl Townsend had a breakout performance on Friday, leading the Frogs with two event wins. Townsend took the top spot in the 200-back with a time of 2:07.61, and followed with a victory in the 200-IM with a clocking of 2:11.15.

Stephanie Futscher, a sophomore from Irving, Texas, remained undefeated in MWC action in the 200-fly event, taking the top spot in a time of 2:11.95. Futscher is now 5-0 in the event against league opponents.

The women's squad received a boost for the spring season with the addition of Maria Alvarez. The Cali, Colombia product provided an immediate spark, winning the 500-free event in a time of 5:10.75. Alvarez also swam to a third-place finish in the 200-free (1:58.21).

Freshman Nikki Pappas recorded her third victory of the season by taking the top spot in the 50-free in a time of 25.35. Fellow freshman Jessica Miles followed in third position with a time of 25.55.

Katie Rosen recorded another solid outing on Friday, swimming to runner-up finishes in the 100- (1:07.94) and 200-breast (2:25.77).

Other Frogs who posted top-three finishes included Meredith Grubb (200-fly), Shannon Jones (100-free), Natalie Melenric (100-fly) and Keilah Walker (1000-free).

In diving action, junior Hannah Hale led the Frogs with a fourth-place showing in the one-meter event (234.15) and a sixth-place finish in the three-meter (233.62).

 

 

The 200-free relay squad of Miles, Mychala Lynch, Jones and Pappas took the top spot in a time of 1:41.28, while the 200-medley relay squad of Brittney Martinez, Ellie Bradley, Lynch and Pappas led TCU with a third-place showing (1:52.56).

The men's and women's squads will return to action on Jan. 10 against BYU at 3 p.m. CT.
