Rifle picks up two victories over the weekend

FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU women's rifle team got the 2006-07 season started in style as they recorded two victories this past weekend. Friday afternoon, TCU picked up a 4,598-4,581 win over Nevada-Reno. They followed the performance with a victory at the Horned Frog Invitational, which featured five schools. Freshman standout Simone Riford broke the school record in 60-shot air rifle in her first collegiate competition, while the team posted the top two aggregate scores in school history. Friday's action saw a pair of newcomers break the air rifle record. With a score of 590 against Nevada-Reno, Riford broke Tanya Gorin's record of 586, which she set back in January at the UTEP Triangular. Riford also finished with a 577 in the smallbore. The freshman was the top scorer in both events for the Frogs. Freshman Erin Lorenzen also shot a 587 in the air rifle, giving her the second top score in the program's history. On Saturday and Sunday, the Frogs hosted the Horned Frog Invitational. TCU's aggregate score of 4,626 allowed the team to claim victory, edging UNR's total of 4,599. UTEP placed third in the meet with an aggregate score of 4,542. The 4,626 aggregate score posted by TCU broke the old mark of 4,573 set at VMI in February of 2006. Riford and Lorenzen helped lead the team to victory as they claimed top honors in the small bore and the air rifle, respectively. Lorenzen had a personal-best 588 in the air rifle, while Riford finished with a personal-best 580 in the small bore. A day after setting a new standard in the air rifle with a team score of 2,327, the Frogs did it again with a score of 2,339. The old mark had previously been 2,306 set at the UTEP Triangular on January 30, 2006. The Frogs return to action on October 14 when they travel to Reno, Nev. for a rematch with UNR.
