July 16, 2007

Commerce, Texas

The NCAA has granted two additional years of eligibility to Texas A&M University-Commerce women's basketball guard Tarika Campbell.

The Long Beach, California native missed the 2005-06 and the 2002-03 seasons due to injuries. In her first action for the Lions, she played an integral role in the first Lone Star Conference North Division Regular Season and Tournament titles in program history and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight. In 32 games, Campbell averaged 3.1 points, 2.9 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 28 steals from her guard position.

Campbell will graduate with her bachelor's degree in business at the end of the summer semester and will begin work on her master's degree in the fall.

Upon arrival at Texas A&M-Commerce, Campbell also missed the 2005-06 season of an injury. Campbell attended Oregon State University where she played in 18 games as a redshirt freshman. She missed her freshman season and the first six games of the 2003-04 season due to injury.

A three-year letterwinner at Lone Beach Wilson High School, Campbell was also a two-time All-CIF South Section all-star and a two-time All-Moore League selection. She was selected as the Moore League MVP as a junior and earned All-Dream Team status as a sophomore and first teams honors in her junior season.

"We are very grateful of the NCAA to allow Tarika two additional years. There is not a more deserving individual than Tarika. In addition to being great news for her, it is also great for our program," said Denny Downing, head women's basketball coach at Texas A&M University-Commerce.
