Texas A&M-Commerce Wins Fourth in a Row in 72-64 Victory Over Tarleton State

A 15-4 run midway through the second half sparked the Texas A&M-Commerce women's basketball team to a 72-64 win over Tarleton State on Thursday night at Wisdom Gym. The Lions, who have won four straight for the first time since Feb. 3-12, 2005, raise their record to 9-6. In the win, the Lions forced 21 TexAnns turnovers as Texas A&M-Commerce outscored Tarleton State, 25-3 in points off turnovers. Three Lions scored in double figures including sophomore Britney Jordan with 20, Kanani Marshal added 18 and Dominee Evans scored 11. Jordan went 7-for-7 from the field and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line in the win. The loss is the TexAnns first defeat inside Wisdom Gym of the season, dropping Tarleton State to 7-3. In the loss, Tarleton State was led by Katie Crawford, who scored 20 and Krystal Cole added 14 to pace the TexAnns. On the strength of four three pointers, the Lions went on a 12-2 run in the middle of the first half to take a 24-16 lead. However, the host TexAnns came right back with an 8-0 run to tie the contest at 24. Each team scored four points apiece to go into the intermission break tied at 28. After being held scoreless the opening 2:42 of the second half, the Lions got on the board when Dawn Montgomery hit a turn-around jumper to tie the contest at 30. Marshal tied the contest for the final time at 35, the Lions went on a 9-2 spurt to take a 45-38 advantage. Tarleton State managed to get within five, 45-40, with 12:44 left in the contest. The Lions blew the contest wide open with a convincing 15-4 run to take control of the contest. In the run, Texas A&M-Commerce went inside and outside. Evans made back-to-back layups to start the run and Jordan hit a pair of jumpers to spark the Lions. Down the stretch, Marshal scored five of the last seven points for Texas A&M-Commerce en route to the victory.
Next, Texas A&M-Commerce travels to Wichita Falls to take on Midwestern State on Saturday at 6 pm. The Mustangs will enter the contest with a 7-5 mark.
