Lions Earn All-Lone Star Conference Honors

With a five-way tie for the Lone Star Conference North Division, the Texas A&M University-Commerce football team landed 14 players on the All-Lone Star Conference North Division Football team announced Tuesday by league officials.
The Lions shared the LSC North title with Central Oklahoma, Southeastern Oklahoma, Southwestern Oklahoma and Northeastern State in a five-way tie. The Lions and the Bulldogs of SWOSU both landed a division-high 14 players on the post-season teams. A&M-Commerce, who finished the season 5-6 overall and 3-2 in the LSC North Division, had six first-team picks on both offense and defense with the Receiver of the Year JaMichael Palmer (Terrell, Texas), Co-Offensive Lineman of the Year Darron Sheppard (Longview, Texas), Defensive Lineman of the Year Marcus Smith (Conroe, Texas) and Co-Freshman of the Year Chris Miller (Carrolton, Texas). The Lions also had a second-team selection on both sides of the ball as well. Running back Nabil El-Amin (Rochester, N.Y.) was a first team all-conference selection as a running back and as a return specialist. Joining El-Amin on the first team were offensive guard Deveon McKinney (Sherman, Texas), offensive tackle Luis Salazar (Hollister, Calif.), Palmer and Sheppard on the offensive side of the ball. Defensively, the Lions defensive linemen Marcus Smith and A.J. Johnson (Tyler, Texas), linebackers Garnet Smith (Arlington, Texas) and Faoki Fifita (San Bernandino, Calif.), cornerback Elliot Jones (Pasadena, Calif.) and safety Alex Contreras (Lockhart, Texas). For Garnet Smith, it is second-straight, first-team selection.
Junior quarterback Terry Mayo (Greensboro, N.C.) and junior punter Daniel Swaim (Kilgore, Texas) were second team selections. Senior fullback Trae Grimes (Round Rock, Texas) was an honorable mention honoree. Overall, 76 student-athletes were recognized by the LSC's postseason awards program, with 29 players named to the first team, 30 on the second team and 17 earning honorable mention. The all-conference honors were selected by the head coaches of the six North Division teams. |
