Johnson, Darkis and Widemond Lead A&M-Commerce to 83-79 Win Over Southern Arkansas

Seniors Scooby Johnson and Derrick Darkis sparked an 11-2 run midway through the second half to lead the Texas A&M University-Commerce men's basketball team to an 83-79 win over Southern Arkansas on Tuesday afternoon at the A&M-Commerce Field House.

Trailing 58-57 with 11:04 left in the contest, Darkis hit his only three pointer of the contest to put the Lions back in front. A&M-Commerce scored, including back-to-back layups by Johnson, on its next three possessions.

Johnson led three Lions in double figures with a game-high 22 points for his 12th consecutive game in double digits. He nearly had his fourth-straight double double with a game-high nine rebounds. Senior Kevin Widemond added 15 points and Darkis was in double digits for the fourth-straight game with 13 points off the bench.

A&M-Commerce (5-7) senior Leonard Bishop Jr. hit a career-high three trifectas in the win en route to nine points. Johnson had three assists and three steals to go along with his 22 points and nine rebounds. Also, in the win, Darkis and freshman Brent Stanton had a career-high six and five assists, respectively.

The Muleriders (7-4) fall for the fourth time to an opponent with the Lions nickname. SAU was led by Mori Turpin, who scored a game-high 23, including six three pointers. He was joined in double figures by Brandon Williams, who added 15.

The Lions will return to Lone Star Conference play for the remainder of its schedule. A&M-Commerce will travel to face Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday at 4 p.m. The Javelinas are currently 10-2 on the season and have won the last five in a row.
