Oct. 26, 2006 The 10th-ranked Southwestern University volleyball team posted a perfect 5-0 record this past weekend as the Pirates hosted the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Cross Divisional in Georgetown, TX. SU opened up play on Friday (Oct. 6) with a straight-set (30-15, 30-22, 30-12) victory over the University of the South. First-year Crystal Jackson (Plano, TX/The Hockaday School) was the top offensive player for Southwestern, notching a career-high 11 kills with a .556 hitting percentage. Marie Bruce (Austin, TX/Connelly HS) dished out 47 assists for a 15.66 assist per game average. In the second game of the evening, SU defeated Centre College 3-0 (30-20, 30-18, 30-26). Allie Spangle (Friendswood, TX/Friendswood HS) recorded a career-high 14 kills while Bruce dished out 41 assists. On day two, Southwestern downed DePauw University in straight-sets (30-28, 30-14, 30-19). The Pirates were led by Katy Lukaszewski (Pasadena, TX/Deer Park HS), who had a double-double with 17 kills and 15 digs. Bruce again led the team with 35 assists as well as a match-high 16 digs. SU followed up the win over DePauw with a 3-0 (30-15, 30-19, 30-21) defeat of Oglethorpe University. Four different Pirates had at least eight kills in the match and Bruce recorded another double-double (37 assists, 12 digs). On Sunday (Oct. 8), Southwestern's only game was a 3-0 (30-25, 30-18, 30-27) win over Rhodes College. Junior Jewel Thomson (Arlington, TX/Summit HS) notched a double-double with 12 kills and 13 digs. Samantha Lingamfelter (New Braunfels, TX/New Braunfels HS) had a tremendous game, recording a career-high 26 digs. Bruce averaged 12.86 assists per game for the weekend and totaled 193 assists in 15 games. The junior also had 59 digs and 10 service aces. Lukaszewski had a team-high 49 kills and was second on the team with 62 digs in 13 games with a .258 hitting percentage. Thomson finished with 44 kills and 40 digs while playing in 14 games. Lingamfelter amassed 85 digs for the Pirates and averaged 5.66 digs per game. As a team, SU had 237 kills in 655 total attempts for a .266 hitting percentage. The Pirates also had 30 total blocks and 36 service aces. The team's record now stands at 20-3, 8-1 in the SCAC. SU will host the Southwestern Fall Break Classic this coming weekend (Oct. 13-14) in Georgetown, TX with Ohio Northern University, Washington & Lee University, Lakeland College and Hardin-Simmons University making the trip.
