#16 Pirates go 3-2 at Second SCAC Cross-Divisional

The 16th-ranked Southwestern Pirates posted a 3-2 record this past weekend in Atlanta, GA at the SCAC Cross Divisional hosted by Oglethorpe University.

SU opened the weekend with a 3-1 (14-30, 30-24, 30-23, 30-28) loss to DePauw University on Friday (Nov. 3). Junior Katy Lukaszewski (Pasadena, TX/Deer Park HS) led the team with 22 kills while also registering 12 digs. Allie Spangle (Friendswood, TX/Friendswood HS) added 14 kills for SU. Setter Marie Bruce (Austin, TX/Connally HS) recorded a double-double with 48 assists and 11 digs while Samantha Lingamfelter (New Braunfels, TX/New Braunfels HS) was credited with a career-high 40 digs.

The Pirates then rebounded to defeat Sewanee in straight sets (30-19, 30-17, 30-15). Lukaszewski once again paced the offense with 14 kills and Bruce dished out 40 assists. First-year Audra Gentry (Albuquerque, NM/Sandia Preparatory) notched 10 kills for Southwestern. Lingamfelter led the team defensively with 12 digs.

On Saturday (Nov. 4), #24 Rhodes College knocked off the Pirates in three sets (30-25, 30-19, 30-26). SU struggled offensively, hitting just .054. The defense played well, recording nine total blocks and three different players had double-digit digs in the match. First-year Crystal Jackson (Plano, TX/The Hockaday School) had five solo blocks and one block assist.

In the second game of the day, Southwestern bested host Oglethorpe University 3-0 (30-22, 30-23, 30-14). Spangle had 14 kills in the match and Jewel Thomson (Arlington, TX/Summit HS) added eight. Bruce recorded 43 assists and 15 digs while Lingamfelter had 18 digs.

The final match of the regular season came on Sunday (Nov. 5) with the Pirates taking down the Centre College Colonels in straight sets (30-25, 30-21, 30-19). Spangle finished with 13 kills and Bruce totaled 38 assists. Mandy Smith (Plano, TX/Greenhill HS) added 14 digs for the Pirates.

For the weekend, Spangle hit .460 with 55 kills. She also had five blocks solos and five block assists. Lukaszewski led the team with 59 kills and also pitched in 49 digs. Bruce averaged 12.43 assists per game, raising her season average to 11.02 per game. She also added 17 kills and 43 digs. Lingamfelter recorded 98 digs and averaged over six per game.

Southwestern closed out the regular season with an overall record of 29-8, 13-5 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.
