Pirates Drop Match at Houston Baptist, 3-0

Houston Baptist University, a NCAA Division I provisional institution, handed the Southwestern University volleyball team a 3-0 (30-25, 30-22, 30-20) setback on Tuesday (Oct. 16) evening in Houston, TX.

Sophomore Lauren Brown (Austin, TX/Saint Michael's Academy) was the sole SU player to reach double-digits in kills with 11 while only committing three attack errors and finishing with a .348 hitting percentage. Senior setter Marie Bruce (Austin, TX/Connally HS) totaled 35 assists as well as five kills on 10 attempts with no errors.

Katy Lukaszewski (Pasadena, TX/Deer Park HS) and Jewel Thomson (Arlington, TX/Summit HS) both recorded seven kills and eight digs. Senior Mandy Smith (Plano, TX/Greenhill School) led the team with 12 digs and Samantha Lingamfelter (New Braunfels, TX/New Braunfels HS) notched nine digs.

The Pirates had just two blocks in the match while the Huskies totaled nine. HBU also hit at a .402 clip while Southwestern hit just .180.

SU's record drops to 16-10 on the season while the Huskies improve to 18-2. The two teams will meet again on Friday (Oct. 26) at the Southwestern University Invitational.

This weekend (Oct. 19-20), the Pirates travel to Sherman, TX for a tournament at Austin College against four American Southwest Conference teams.
