Southwestern Volleyball Goes 2-2 on First Weekend of SCAC Play

The Southwestern University volleyball team opened Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference competition this past weekend in Colorado Springs, CO with three conference games.

The Pirates opened play against provisional SCAC member Birmingham-Southern College on Friday (Sept. 14) with a 3-0 (30-24, 30-25, 31-29) loss. Senior Katy Lukaszewski (Pasadena, TX/Deer Park HS) posted a team-high 15 kills in the match as well as eight digs. The loss does not count against the Pirates in the SCAC standings.

In the second match of the day, Southwestern defeated Millsaps College 3-0 (30-15, 30-20, 30-17). The Pirate offense was paced by sophomore Audra Gentry (Albuquerque, NM/Sandia Preparatory) who had 15 kills and a .583 attack percentage over three games.

The following day, SU took on Hendrix College and won its second game of the weekend 3-0 (30-11, 30-20, 30-21). Senior setter Marie Bruce (Austin, TX/Connally HS) quarterbacked the Pirate offense with 32 assists while the team totaled nine blocks.

In the final match on Saturday (Sept. 15), the Pirates lost a hard-fought match to the host Colorado College Tigers 3-1 (27-30, 30-19, 30-27, 30-21). SU had four different players reach double-digits in kills and sophomore Samantha Lingamfelter (New Braunfels, TX/New Braunfels HS) recorded 31 digs in the match.

SU posted a 2-2 record for the weekend and a 2-1 record to open conference play. The Pirates' overall record now stands at 10-2.

Southwestern has another SCAC Cross Divisional this coming weekend in Danville, KY on the campus of Centre College on Saturday (Sept. 22) and Sunday (Sept. 23) for four matches against conference competition.
