The Southwestern University women's soccer team battled the Hardin-Simmons Cowgirls to a 2-2 tie in Abilene, TX on Tuesday (Sept. 5), bringing its record to 0-1-1. The Pirates opened up scoring when sophomore Casey Grier (Spring, TX/Klein Collins HS) scored her first goal of the season at 12:31 to give SU a 1-0 lead. SU goalie Eryn Snyder (Spring Branch, TX/Smithson Valley HS) and the Pirate defense kept the Cowgirls off the scoreboard through the first period. In the second period, first-year Laura Kromann (Austin, TX/Bowie HS) gave SU a 2-0 lead with her first goal as a Pirate. SU couldn't make the lead stick as HSU's Jordan Morley scored on a penalty kick to pull within one. Southwestern had a penalty shot of its own at 66:35 but HSU goalie Ashley Jackson stopped Grier's shot, keeping the score at 2-1. With less than nine minutes to play, Hardin-Simmons tied the game at 2-2 on a goal by Amy Kuykendall. The two teams then fought through two overtimes, but neither could get the ball in the goal, with the game ending in a 2-2 tie. HSU out-shot the Pirates 40-11 and had 18 corner kicks while SU had zero. Snyder had 17 saves in goal for Southwestern. The Pirates return to the field on Saturday (Sept. 9) when they travel to Lexington, VA where they will take on Randolph Macon College at 2:30 pm. SU Sports Information |
