Women's Golf in Third, Men in 13th After Day One in Seguin

The SU men's and women's golf teams kicked off their fall season on Monday (Sept. 10) in Seguin, TX with the women sitting in third place and within striking distance of first while the men are in 13th place.

2007 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Golfer of the Year Marisa Mauldin (Utopia, TX/Utopia HS) is tied for first after one round after firing a 76. Sophomore Kristen Davenport (Mansfield, TX/Mansfield HS) is five strokes behind Mauldin with a score of 81, good for a seventh-place tie.

Behind Davenport are Cody Wallace (Austin, TX/Lake Travis HS) and Victoria Dominguez (Bastrop, TX/Bastrop HS) who both tallied 86 and are tied for 26th place. Junior Jenny Howell (Houston, TX/Jersey Village HS) is in a tie for 45th after shooting a 92.

The Pirates are just six strokes out of first place behind a Tyler Junior College team that shot a 323. In second place is St. Mary's University (327) followed by SU (329) and McMurry University (335) with the University of Texas at Brownsville (339) rounding out the top five.

The men were led by sophomore Ricky Jones (St. Louis, MO/Eureka HS) and first-year Stephen Gehring (College Station, TX/A&M Consolidated HS) who both had two-round tallies of 149. The two are tied for 30th. Ian Rice (Amarillo, TX/Amarillo HS) is currently three strokes behind his teammates with a 152, tied for 51st.

Xan Erwin (Austin, TX/Westwood HS), a junior, is in a 73rd-place tie with a 158 while Tyler Russell totaled 165.

As a team, the Pirates shot a 608. The tournament leader is Tyler Junior College (563) with the rest of the top-five as follows; Texas Lutheran University (570), University of Texas-Tyler (576), McMurry University (576) and the Univerity of Mary Hardin-Baylor (579).

Both teams will close out their respective tournaments on Tuesday (Sept. 11) in Seguin.
