Southwestern University head men's soccer coach Don Gregory had a special day as he got to coach against his son Sean on Sunday (Sept. 10), with Sean's Methodist Monarchs coming out on top, 3-2. Sophomore David Lozano (Austin, TX/University of Dayton) got the offense started as he beat the Methodist keeper at 9:09 for his second goal of the season and a 1-0 lead for the Pirates. Lozano was assisted by Lauro Davalos (Mission, TX/Mission HS) on the goal. It was Davalos' fifth assist of the season. That lead did not last long, however, as Ime Umoh tied the game during the 11th minute. In the second period, John Martinez (McAllen, TX/Rowe HS) put the Pirates back on top with a goal in the 54th minute. Martinez has scored a goal in five consecutive games for Southwestern. Methodist once again had an answer for SU and it was Umoh again as he scored his second goal just six minutes after the goal by Martinez. Umoh then completed the hat trick with under four minutes left to play, putting Methodist ahead 3-2. Southwestern lost despite out-shooting the Monarchs 13 to four and holding a three to zero advantage in corner kicks. The Pirates return to the field on Friday (Sept. 15) as they travel to San Antonio, TX to face rival Trinity University at 7:00 p.m. SU Sports Information |
