The Southwestern men's and women's tennis teams both earned victories on Tuesday (Mar. 27) over the Schreiner University Mountaineers in Georgetown, TX. Southwestern Women 9, Schreiner Women 0 The number one doubles pairing of Mary Pennington (San Antonio, TX/Churchill HS) and Michelle Tompkins (Friendswood, TX/Friendswood HS) made quick work of the Mountaineers in their match, winning 8-0. Leslie Smith (Temple, TX/Temple HS) and Emily Gutzmer (Austin, TX/Anderson HS) earned an 8-5 win in the second flight. The third flight went to SU by default. In singles play, Pennington won 6-2, 6-1 in the first flight while Smith took the second flight 6-1, 6-1. In the third flight, Tompkins fought for a 6-4, 6-4 victory in the third flight while Laura Evanoff (Breckenridge, TX/Breckenridge HS) won 6-4, 6-3 in the fourth slot. Senior Amy Somerford (Nacogdoches, TX/Nacogdoches HS) cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win and first-year Allison Noblitt (Lake Jackson, TX/Brazoswood HS) won by default. Southwestern Men 5, Schreiner Men 4 The men lost two of three points in doubles as the senior tandem of Nick Shum (Scottsdale, AZ) and Jay Shroff (Midland, TX/Big Spring HS) won their match 8-2. The second and third flights fell 8-2 and 8-4, respectively. Shroff enjoyed a two-win day as he won his singles match 6-2, 6-1. Shum also won his singles match with a 6-2, 6-3 victory in the third flight. Dan Otto (Austin, TX/St. Stephen's Episcopal HS) won a hard-fought three-set match 6-4, 4-6, 7-6. In the fifth flight, senior Sean Kissinger (Mansfield, TX/Mansfield HS) was victorious in two sets 6-1, 6-3. The women's record improves to 5-3 on the year while the men are now 2-6. The teams travel to Atlanta, GA and Sewanee, TN to face fellow Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference members Oglethorpe University, Sewanee - The University of the South and Centre College on Friday (Mar. 30) and Saturday (Mar. 31).
