Bergfield Sets New Conference Record at SCAC Championships

Sophomore Alana Bergfield (Dhahran, Saudi Arabia/The Cranbrook School) set a new Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference record in the 100 yard breaststroke on Friday (Feb. 9) at the SCAC Swimming and Diving Championships being held in Crawfordsville, IN.

Bergfield set the mark at 1:07.48 during the prelims, which also was good for a NCAA B qualifying time. As the number one seed in the finals, Bergfield broke her own record with a time of 1:06.89 to capture the individual crown in the 100 yard breaststroke. She also took third place in the finals of the 400 yard individual medley with a time of 4:42.57.

The team of Bergfield, Jessie Carrier (Victoria, TX/St. Joseph HS), Lorena Saenz (San Antonio, TX/Alamo Heights HS) and Allie Stevenson (Round Rock, TX/McNeil HS) also recorded a third place finish in the 200 yard medley relay, finishing in 1:53.16. Other results for the day include Carrier placing eighth in the 100 yard butterfly, Saenz taking 11th in the 200 yard freestyle, Jon LaRochelle (Angleton, TX/Milton Academy) swimming a 1:04.39 in the 100 yard breaststroke for 14th place and SU women's teams taking sixth and 15th in the 800 yard freestyle relay.

The Pirate women are in sixth place after two days of competition, totaling 220 points with the final day taking place on Saturday (Feb. 10).
