SOUTHERN’S TAKEUCHI TAKES TOP HONORS IN ALL-SWAC VOLLEYBALL

Southern University’s Mayumi Takeuchi picked up Player of the Year honors to top the 2002 All-Southwestern Athletic Conference team. Mary Reese of Prairie View A&M was selected Newcomer of the Year, Brittany Ward of Alcorn State earned Freshman of the Year honors and Krystal Credit was named the Libero-Defensive Specialist of the Year. The All-SWAC Volleyball team is selected in voting by the conference’s coaches and sports information directors.

Takeuchi, a 5-9 junior MB/OH from Sendai, Japan, led the Southern Jaguars Volleyball team to a second place West Division finish during the SWAC during the regular season. In 24 matches she averaged 7.1 kills/gm 4.71 digs/m with 1.92 blocks/gm. She was twice named SWAC Volleyball Player of the Week.

Reese of Prairie View A&M, is a 5-5 junior OH/DS from Temple, Texas, averaged 2.33 kills/gm and 2.66 digs/gm in 91games this season. Brittany Ward of Alcorn State, is a 5-7 freshman setter from Beaumont, Texas who ranks second in the SWAC in assists with 9.68 per game. In a new award category, Libero-Defensive Specialist, Krystal Credit of Grambling State, a 5-8 sophomore from Los Angeles, California got the top nod for the season.

Overall, on the All-SWAC team selected by East and West Division, Alcorn State and Grambling State had five players named to the team. Defending champion Alabama A&M had three players as did Southern, Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern. Jackson State, Mississippi Valley State had two players picked and Alabama State had one player selected.

The All-SWAC team will be honored on Wednesday night (11/13) as a prelude to the Southwestern Athletic Conference Volleyball Championship. The Championship tournament will be conducted on the campus of Alabama A&M University in Huntsville, AL on Thursday and Friday, November 14-15.
