TWO GAMES
ADDED TO TELEVISION SCHEDULE A pair of California games have been added to the
SWAC football television schedule.
The Capital City
Classic between
Texas Southern and Shaw from
Sacramento will be shown
on Comcast Sports Net next Saturday, Sept. 13 at 4 p.m. (CT). A few weeks later on Sat. Sept. 27, the Angel
City Classic matchup between Prairie View A&M and Morehouse from the Los
Angeles Coliseum will be televised live on Fox Sports Net at 4:30 p.m. (CT).
That brings the
total of regionally or nationally televised games involving SWAC teams to 18 in
2008.
STRONG
DEBUTS While Texas Southern QB Bobby Reid was perhaps the most highly
anticipated debut in the SWAC last week, one of his teammates had a big debut
of his own.
Freshman CB
Demarcus Washington made a pair of interceptions against Prairie View A&M.
The 5-9, 160-pounder from
Dallas also showed
big-play ability once he got his on the ball, as
Washington had 87 return yards on his two
picks.
Washington?s
returned his second-quarter interception 29 yards, giving the Tigers great
field position at the PVAMU 32. Although
Texas
Southern didn?t score, the tone of the game changed as Prairie View A&M had
scored on four of its first five possessions.
On Prairie View
A&M?s first possession of the second half,
Washington snagged his second interception
and returned it 58 yards to the Panthers? 27-yard line. Five plays later, TSU
scored its second touchdown of the night on a 16-yard touchdown run by another
freshman, Marcus Wright.
Washington is tied for second in the nation in interceptions, trailing
only Eddie Calvin of
Southeast
Missouri
State,
who had three interceptions against Southwest Baptist.
Washington?s interception return yardage
leads the nation.
Also making
strong debuts last week was Prairie View A&M redshirt freshman RB Micheal
Jason, who rushed 16 times for 78 yards and a touchdown, Arkansas-Pine Bluff
freshman WR Anthony Abrams, who caught five passes for 72 yards and a
touchdown, and Grambling RB Kenneth Batiste, who caught six passes for 95 yards
and a touchdown.
