The Southwestern Athletic Conference will hold its annual Kickoff Luncheon & Media Day on Tuesday, July 22.  The media activities will be held at the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame while the luncheon will take place at the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex. The media day activities will begin at 9:00 a.m. with interview sessions from the head coaches and student athletes from all ten conference institutions. Following the interview sessions, the kickoff luncheon will begin at 11:30 a.m. The 2008 preseason all-SWAC teams, preseason honors and predicted order of finish will be announced.
The keynote speaker for the luncheon is former Southern University and standout Aeneas Williams.  As a senior at Southern, Williams led the nation in interceptions. In a 14-year NFL career with the Phoenix/Arizona Cardinals (1991-2000) and St. Louis Rams (2001-04), the future Pro Football Hall of Famer grabbed 55 career interceptions, scored 12 defensive touchdowns (nine via interception return, three via fumble return), and earned eight Pro Bowl appearances. In 2001, Williams helped lead the Rams to an appearance in Super Bowl XXXVI. Among his many accolades, Williams is tied for the longest fumble return in NFL history, and holds an NFL playoff record with two interception returns for touchdowns in the same game.
Limited tickets are available to the public for $30 and can be obtained by contacting the Conference Office at (205) 251-7573.  Media reservations will begin this week; registration forms can be found on the conference website and requested from the SWAC Media Relations office.   # SWAC #
