Texas Southern Advances to 2008 SWAC Baseball Championship

  BatonRouge, LA – Texas Southern’s game three of the SWAC Baseball Tournament was no upset. TSU beat Jackson State 9-2 to advance to Monday’s Championship game.   It took five and a-half innings before someone got on the scoreboard and it was the TSU Tigers who struck first. DeShaun Dilworth doubled to drive in Michael Norris for the first run. Kyle Smith hit a single to left center field to send Dilworth across the plate. Jordan Bush drove in the next three runs with a single up the middle. TSU ended the inning up 5-0.   The Tigers picked up two more runs in the sixth inning on singles by Smith and Earnest Rhone, Jr.   Norris made it 8-0 in the seventh inning when he drove in David James.  Jackson State picked up two runs in the eighth when Cortez Cole singled in Braneric Holmes. Cole crossed the plate on wild pitch to make the score 8-2.  Texas Southern got one run back in the bottom of the inning when Bush doubled to send Rhone home for the score.   TSU pitcher Rashad Ford finished off J-State in the top of the ninth for his second complete game and win of the season. Ford had ten strikeouts, three walks and eight hits after facing 38 batters in nine innings.   Jackson State's runs all came in the eighth inning, with Braneric Holmes
and Cortez Cole scoring for the Tigers.  Derrick Johnson led JSU's offensive attack with two hits. Cole had a hit, run and RBI. Jordan Bush led Texas Southern with two hits and four RBI.

Nicholas Stewart suffered the loss for JSU. In 4.1 innings of work he gave
up four runs on four hits, while recording a strikeout.   Texas Southern will face Prairie View A&M on Monday for the SWAC Baseball Championship. The game begins at 1:00pm. The game will air on ESPNU at 6:00pm.
