Baseball Doubles Up Northwood, 6-3

Feb. 14, 2006

Box Score

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.--Adrian F. Gonzalez continued his hot hitting, going 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI to lead St. Thomas University to a 6-3 victory over Northwood University (Fla.) Tuesday at Silvester Field.

Tim Davis picked up the win for the Bobcats, who maintain an unblemished record, improving to 6-0 on the season. They now hold a 2-0 edge in the season series between these Florida Sun Conference rivals. The Seahawks fell to 1-3.

Gonzalez was one of four St. Thomas players with two hits on the afternoon, as the Bobcats knocked out 10 hits against eight different Northwood pitchers. Aliercy Nunez was 2-for-4 with two RBI while Jose Rey was 2-for-4 with a solo home run in his first start of the season.

Both teams got on the board with a run in the first inning, as each team's leadoff hitter reached base to start things off. Juan Mora singled to plate Alex Pascual for the Bobcats, while Joe D'Andrea brought home Eric Woodward on a single for the Seahawks in the bottom of the inning.

St. Thomas grabbed a 2-1 edge in the fourth on an RBI single to center by Nunez to score Daniel DiFabio.

The Bobcats added two more in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead. Rey singled to lead off before Alex Pascual was given an intentional walk with two outs. Northwood's decision to walk Pascual and pitch to the Bobcats' hottest hitter went from mysterious to devastating when Gonzalez yanked a double down the leftfield line to score both runners.

Another Nunez RBI hit extended the Bobcats' lead to 5-1 in the eighth. His two-out single scored Gonzalez, who had doubled again with one out.

Dario Martinez, making his first appearance as a Bobcat, relieved Davis after he pitched a scoreless fourth, fifth and six in relief of freshman Daylan Gil. Martinez tossed a perfect seventh but ran into trouble with two outs in the eighth.

He gave up a single to D'Andrea and then balked him to second. Mike Farrell then reached and D'Andrea scored when DiFabio's throw was errant on Farrell's grounder to third. Two walks and two wild pitches meant another Seahawks run and the end of Martinez's afternoon. Ivan Izquierdo came on and, after he also balked, got Adonay Suarez to pop to Nunez at first to end the threat with St. Thomas still holding a 5-3 advantage.

Rey padded the Bobcats lead in the top of the ninth on a leadoff home run off Northwood's eighth pitcher, Matt Weihs.

Izquierdo's wildness created tension in the ninth inning. Two walks and a single sandwiched around a strikeout filled the bases with Seahawks with one out. With the winning run at the plate, Izquierdo induced a shallow fly off D'Andrea's bat before fanning Farrell to end things and pick up his first save.

Gil was wild in his first collegiate outing, walking four over three innings. Gil's four bases on balls were part of a generous afternoon for St. Thomas' hurlers, who combined to walk nine batters, throw two wild pitches and commit two balks. Despite that charity, the Bobcats avoided further damage thanks in large part to four double plays.

Both teams open conference play this Friday. St. Thomas will travel to Warner Southern (Fla.) for a three-game series beginning Friday at 3 p.m. in Lake Wales. Northwood hosts Embry-Riddle for the first of three on Friday afternoon at 2:45 p.m.
