Zub And Maloy Honored By America East
Oct. 21, 2002 Stony Brook, N.Y. - Two individuals from the Stony Brook Seawolves volleyball team scored America East honors thanks to impressive performances last week in wins over conference rivals Binghamton and Albany. Sophomore Valerie Maloy was named as the conference's Player of the Week and sophomore Julie Zub has been tapped as the America East's Setter of the Week, marking the second time this year she has received such an honor. Maloy posted two double-doubles on the weekend, averaging 4.67 kills per game to go along with her 2.89 per-game average in the digs category. Friday night, Maloy's double-double (14 kills/12 digs) against Binghamton helped the Seawolves take the victory in five and Saturday night, she again scored a double-double (28 kills/14 digs) in the 3-1 win over Albany. Maloy's 28 kills in that match is a career high for her, eclipsing her old mark of 26. Zub was instrumental in setting up the attack from her setter position. She finished the week averaging 13.11 assists per game and also played an important role on defense, digging an average of 2.89 balls per game. Zub's 62 assists Friday night in the 3-2 win over Binghamton set a new school record for assists in a five-game match, topping her own record of 61. In addition to her 62 assists she also killed four balls. Saturday night, Zub continued to post impressive numbers, tallying 56 assists and 16 digs. Maloy, Zub and the rest of the volleyball team are back in action Saturday as they come home to the SBU Sports Complex after a grueling 17-match road trip. The Seawolves currently sit in third place with a 3-2 record against America East competition and a 17-9 mark overall. |
