Men's And Women's Tennis Capture Victories Over St. John's

Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook women's tennis team won its sixth consecutive dual match while the men's team also posted a victory in the Seawolves' dual match with local rival St. John's on Wednesday. The women's team won 5-2, while the men's team recorded a 4-3 win. Both teams captured the doubles point to grab an early lead over the Red Storm. The No. 1 doubles team of Martha Barrett and Karen Hansen won 8-5 while Patricia Gomez and Georgia Bushell won at No. 2, 8-3. The Seawolves then won four of six singles matches for the 5-2 decision. Gomez, playing at No. 2 singles, posted an easy 6-3, 6-1, victory, while No. 6 Deanna Ghozati also won in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4. Hansen, playing at No. 3 singles, rallied after losing the opening set 6-2 and went on to win, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. No. 5 Olesya Ianovitch also went three sets, winning 7-5, 4-6, 6-4. The men's team won all three doubles matches and needed the doubles point for a 4-3 decision. Jens Pillgram-Larsen and Gareth Williams won 8-6 at No. 1 doubles. The No. 3 tandem of Philippe Amireault and James Carpenter posted an 8-3 victory. The No. 2 match had to be decided by tie-breaker, but Egil Anonsen and David Hewitt won, 7-6 (7-5). The Seawolves dropped the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches, but it took the Red Storm three sets in both matches and a tie-breaker in the No. 1 spot for the wins. No. 3 Williams cruised in his opening set, winning 6-0, 6-4, while Amireault recorded a 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles. Carpenter won at No. 6, 7-6, 6-2. The Seawolves women's team improved to 10-4 this season, while the men's team is now 4-3. |
