Men's And Women's Tennis Sweep Sacred Heart

Fairfield, Conn. - The Stony Brook men's and women's tennis teams did not lose a match in sweeping Sacred Heart on Thursday afternoon. Both teams posted 7-0 victories. The women's team (3-4) swept all three doubles matches and all six singles, dropping just one set along the way. The No. 1 doubles team of Patricia Gomez and Anne Cathrine Valle won, 8-4, while Karen Hansen and Carmie Zink teamed for an 8-3 victory at No. 2. The No. 3 duo of Georgia Bushell and Lauren Conching defeated Kim Giangregonato and Katelyn Kiltredge, 8-2. At No. 1 singles, Gomez captured the first set, 6-0, but Laruen Galatie battled back to win the second, 6-4. However, Gomez outlasted Galatie in the deciding set, 10-5. Valle did not lose a game in defeating Darcy Shoop, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2 singles, while Hansen posted a 6-1, 6-4, victory over Somin Salli at No. 3. Bushell, playing at No. 4, kept things going with a 6-1, 7-5, win over Jeanne Sampson. Zink defeated Lison VonBrecht, 6-1, 7-5, at No. 5, and Conching won 7-6, 6-3, over Tiffany Paul at No. 6 singles. The men's team (3-5) was just as dominant, winning every match on the day. Egil Anonsen and Gareth Williams teamed for a 9-8 victory at No. 1 doubles, while the No. 2 team of Jean-Francois Robitaille and David Hewitt recorded an 8-2 win. Michael Crooks and James Carpenter won the No. 3 match in impressive fashion with an 8-0 win. In singles action, Crooks dropped the first set at No. 1, 6-4, to Marjan Kalinj, but evened the match with a 6-3 win in the second set. He then captured the tiebreaker, 12-10, for the win. Anonsen breezed to a 6-0, 6-0, victory over Steven George at No. 2 singles, one of three Seawolves to shut out his opponent. No. 5 Hewitt and No. 6 Amireault also recorded 6-0, 6-0, victories. Robitaille was victorious at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-4, over Jeff Bouers, while Carpenter easily defeated Ryan Darragh at No. 4, 6-0, 6-2. Both teams return to action on Saturday when the Seawolves face St. John's on the road. |
