Justin Drzal is back for a fifth season as an assistant coach at Stony Brook. Prior to joining the Stony Brook staff, Drzal was the assistant women's tennis coach at Virginia from 1998-2001. While at Virginia, he received the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Assistant Coach of the Year Award for the East Region in 2000, and helped the Cavaliers to back-to-back 13-10 records, including two consecutive seasons at 3-5 in the very competitive Atlantic Coast Conference. He helped the Cavaliers to a spot in the WingspanBank.com national rankings, coming in at 53rd in the May 1, 2000 polls. The following season, he helped lead the Cavaliers to an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships. Drzal graduated Magna Cum Laude from Stonehill College in 1998 where he majored in American studies and communications. He played on the tennis team from 1994-1998, captaining the squad his junior and senior years while playing No. 1 singles and doubles. He was awarded the Edward E. Martin Scholar-Athlete Award in 1998. Drzal earned his master's degree in teaching from Dowling College and currently teaches in the Connetquot School District. |
