Men's and Women's Swimming Competes in Orange Bowl Swim Classic

Key Largo, Fla. - The Stony Brook University men's and women's swimming team traveled to Key Largo, Florida to participate in the Orange Bowl Swim Classic held at the Jacobs Aquatics Center on January 6.

In the first event of the day, the Seawolves "A" 200 medley relay team comprised of Lucy Liu, Brittany Whipple, Anjelica D'Esposito and Courtney Teague just missed out on first place by five tenths of a second, posting second with a time of 2:08.45. Stony Brook followed in the next event with a first place victory by the men's "A" medley relay team of Ruslan Safarov, Vladimir Sreckovic, Alexei Smirnov and Matt Descovich. The four combined to win in 1:53.02.

In the next event, the 400 meter freestyle, Rebecca Sayles touched fifth with a time of 5:01.44. In the men's 50 meter butterfly, Descovich placed third with a time of 28.06 and was followed by Safarov, who easily won the 100 meter backstroke in 1:02.45.

Stony Brook placed yet another first place finisher in an event when Whipple won the 50 meter breaststroke in 35.51. Sreckovic followed in the same event edging Robert Swaninger of Boston College by 15 tenths of a second in 31.84.

In the 100 meter freestyle, Dan Piastuck placed fifth with a time of 59.20, giving Stony Brook yet another top-five finish. Following Piastuck's finish, D'Esposito followed in the 100 meter butterfly, placing fourth. Liu and Ray Sato each posted top-five finishes in the women's and men's 50 meter backstroke.
 

 

Sreckovic continued his strong OB classic, swimming to a second-place finish in the 100 meter breaststroke in 1:11.16. Whipple capped off the Seawolves' individual events when she posted another top-five finish, touching the wall in 29.14.

Stony Brook ended the meet posting second and fourth place finishes, respectively, in the 200 meter freestyle relay.
