STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Stony Brook men's and women's swimming and diving teams scored a split with the Fordham Rams Wednesday night at University Pool. The men (2-1) tallied their first win ever (133.5-100.5) over the Rams in the sports 25-year history at Stony Brook. The women (1-2) finished the meet falling short of the Rams, 152-90.

The men took first place in 11 out of 13 events on the evening and claimed three second place finishes. Nathan French got things going early when he scored a first place finish in the 1000 free with a time of 10:04.01. The Seawolves rolled right into the 200 free and took first and second place thanks to Ted Freeborn's 1.47.23 and Kyle Thorton's 1.47.64. Stony Brook reeled off its third straight first place finish due to Jim Payne's 22.16 finish in the 50 free.

Matt Hanson increased the team's lead to 20 points and scored a new school record after taking first in the 200 fly with a time of 1:54.30, breaking the previous mark of 1:56.00 held by John Kuck. Freeborn would score his second first place finish of the day with a time of 48.43 in the 100 free and Nathan French took top spot in the 200 back with a 1:58.31 time. Kyle Thornton would score another top finish just before the second diving break, thanks to his 4:54.18 time in the 500 free. The men's side would finish up strong, taking second in the 200 breast and first in the 400 free relay thanks to the team of Thornton, Freeborn, Dan Berzansky and Roger Pugh.

The women scored two second place victories to start the meet, with the team of Kim Harris, Michelle Miller, Jessica Claud and Starlyn Rupinski taking the runner-up position in the 400 MR with a time of 4:05.16 and Erin Bowman's second-place time of 11:16.70 in the 100 free. Claud also finished second individually in the 50 free with a time of 25.69. Miller and Rupinski took runner-up positions in the 200 fly and 100 free, respectively. Harris also scored second in the 200 back with a time of 2:16.11. Claud jumped into first place in the 200 breast and the Seawolves scored another top finish in the 400 free relay with the team of Harris, Adriana Snydstrup, Jamie Bevilacqua and Miller finishing with a 3:34.99 time.

Pat Marcel continues to roll in the diving competition, taking first place on both the one and three meter boards. His score of 286.73 on the three-meter sets a new school record, eclipsing his own record of 275.70. The women also performed well, with Kristi Schubert taking second on both boards and Erin Byrnes claiming the top spot on the three-meter.
