Women's Soccer Beats Vermont 1-0 To Clinch Playoff Berth

Nov. 1, 2002

Final Stats

Burlington, Vt. - Freshman Danielle Lewis (Livonia, Mich.) put back a rebound of her own shot at 21:32 of the first half to lead Stony Brook (6-9-3, 4-1-2) past Vermont, 1-0, in an America East women's soccer match. With the win, the Seawolves clinched a berth in the America East Women's Soccer Championship to be held next Friday. Should the Seawolves defeat Hartford in the regular season finale on Sunday, they will be crowned the America East regular season champs and play host next weekend.

The game was played in miserable conditions as snow and sleet played havoc all game long and forced the two teams to compete on a muddy field. It was the Seawolves who prevailed as Krisha Zagura's cross in the first half was collected by Lewis and put in on a rebound shot to lift SB to the win.

Cindy Bennett (Canton,Mich.) was once again outstanding in the goal for Stony Brook, making eight stops to earn her fifth win of the year and her fourth shutout of the season. Senior Brook Fairbanks made five saves for the Catamounts.

The victory continued an outstanding run by the Seawolves to close the regular season. SB is 4-1-1 in it last six outings, 4-0-1 in conference play as it climbed to within one point of the first place Hartford Hawks.

Stony Brook will take a shot at the regular season title on Sunday at Hartford. Kickoff is 1 p.m.
