Two Second Half Goals Propel Women's Soccer Past Sacred Heart, 2-0
Sept. 16, 2005 The Stony Brook University women's soccer team tallied two goals in under four minutes in the second half to defeat Sacred Heart, 2-1, this evening at fan friendly Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium in the Holiday Inn Express Invitational. Sacred Heart (1-4-1) lit up the scoredboard first when Erica Rico netted a goal 37:18 in to the first half off a terrific individual effort. Rico beat three Seawolves defenders before slipping the ball past senior goalkepper Cindy Bennett. The Pioneers controlled the half, outshooting the Seawolves, 6-1, in the first stanza. Stony Brook (2-5-1) exploded out of the gate in the second half, tallying two goals in a four minute span. Sophomore midfielder Tiffany Fasullo recieved a through-ball feed from freshman Trine Allenberg from 40 yards out, slipped behind the defense, and buried the ball into the back of the twine just under nine minutes into the second half. Freshman Kate Attenberger tallied the game-winner 3:21 seconds later after she found herself alone at the top of the 18-yard box and lofted the ball over a sprawling Pioneer goalkeeper. Ashley Mocarski registered three saves on the night, while her counterpart, Bennett saved two balls on the evening for Stony Brook. The Seawolves return to action when they host St. Francis (Pa.) on Sunday, September 18 in the final game of the Holiday Inn Express Invitational. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. In the first game of the tournament, St. Francis (Pa.) defeated Stetson, 1-0, in double overtime. The two teams battled to a scoreless first and second half, as well as the first overtime session.
Just 2:10 remained in the game when Kelly Carlsen ripped a free kick from 45 yards out that lofted over the Hatters defense. Ashlie Knowles collected the ball and fired into the right hand corner of the net to give the Red Flash their fourth win of the season. Melanie Stockman registered eight saves on the night for St. Francis, while April Eilering made just one save for Stetson on the afternoon. |
